This week, the Environment Club started to record some of the different species of plant and animal that we share the school grounds with. We used the Seek app from iNaturalist to help us identify what we found in the orchard area of the school (see our previous post on Measuring Biodiversity). Here is a list of some of the things we found:

  • Yorkshire Fog grass
  • Cock’s foot grass
  • Great Mullein
  • Common poppy
  • Red clover
  • Field horsetail
  • Chives
  • Brome grass
  • Bird’s foot trefoil
  • creeping buttercup
  • Douglas’ meadowfoam (poached egg plant)
  • Common daisy
  • Shining pepperweed
  • Purple toadflax
  • Leavenworth’s eryngo
  • Dandelion
  • Common groundsel
  • Light brown apple moth
  • Red-tailed bumble bee

There are loads more to identify! If you might be interested in doing a “bio-blitz” (a biodiversity survey) of the school grounds with your children please contact Mr Magnall who will see if he can arrange one.
