Feeding birds can be a very rewarding experience, for the birds and for you! Cold weather, snow and ice, and shorter days make it much harder for birds to thrive. You can help them by putting out appropriate food but it might cost a bit more than tuppence a day. The RSPB website has an excellent guide to feeding birds

Talking of the RSPB, the Big Garden Birdwatch is back on the 24-26 January. This is a brilliant example of Citizen Science  allowing the public to be involved in vital research to help us understand how the population of our birds is changing. All you need to do is spend an hour watching and recording the birds that you see in the patch you choose to observe – ideal if you have bird feeders in your garden! You then report your findings back to the RSPB.

When you sign up for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch you receive a free bird guide to help you identify the birds and a discount for the RSPB shop, ideal for stocking up on bird food!
You can also make your own bird feeders and bird food – the RSPB give some examples or you can find many other ideas by using a good search engine.
