This term we have been focussing on hedgehogs and their habitat. Hedgehog numbers have been in serious decline since 2000, we think that we have lost a third of our hedgehogs.
As it comes to bonfire night we are aware that at this time of year hedgehogs are looking for piles of leaves or wood to hide under in order to sleep or hibernate and an unlit bonfire is the perfect place, or so they think!
If you are having a bonfire on bonfire night please think about the hedgehogs. Store your bonfire materials away from your bonfire site and only build your bonfire shortly before you light it. This way you are very unlikely to have a snoring hedgehog hiding in your bonfire.
If you want to enjoy bonfire night whilst being mindful of the environment and wildlife you might find this article by the Avon Wildlife Trust interesting.
