Wildlife habitats – log piles

Dead wood is a great habitat for all sorts of creature. Minibeasts, fungi and other small creatures will feed on the wood and they become food to birds, small mammals and amphibians. The wood gradually brakes down and produces a moisture trapping soil that is great for some wild flowers and soil creatures.

There are some excellent websites on how to build a log pile in your garden and what you might be providing a home for. The Woodland Trust, People’s Trust for Endangered Species and the RSPB all have good pages about wood pile projects which are excellent activities to do with your children.
